Agility - Mogul Walk
Mogul Walk
Goal:
To demonstrate independent leg action in moguls.
Body Position: In a mogul field, take 3 moving marching steps
steps straight down the hill and then make 3 turns.
The Mogul Walk is designed to develp quick feet and constant turns.
It is the Three-Step Turn with moguls added. Find an intermediate
mogul run, not too steep, with small bumps. Start by taking three
marching steps and then make three slalom turns. Remember that you
must adapt to the terrain, so you control the pace of the steps and
the pace of the turns. I recommend that you think, "Quick feet and
fast turns."
The beauty of this drill is that you will seek out the path of least
resistance, which will change between steps and turns. This proves
that there is no one line through the moguls. Rather, using your
mobility, fluidity, and agility, there are many. The illustrations
on the cards and in the video show the consistency of the upper body
and quick-moving feet in both the steps and turns.
Try to complete two sets in a row at a constant speed. Remember that
you can control your speed with knee angulation, forcing pressure on
your boot, which results in edge pressure against the snow.
Independent leg action in moguls is very important. It allows skiers
to move laterally. It also increases stability since the skier is
not deflecting his or her body from bump to bump. Instead the skier
is absorbing, extending, and turning around and over the moguls.
This drill will develop reaction time and skiers can begin to
increase their speed as long as the pace stays constant.
