Agility - Mogul Ride
Mogul Ride
Goal: To
build power and agility into your mogul skiing.
Body Position: Make large radius turns through the moguls and
initiate the turns by jumping up and down the fall line.
For the last two drills, we have been skiing smooth and agile. Now
we are going to add power and dynamic motion to our mogul skiing.
Start again by skiing the entire width of the slope and when it
comes time to turn, ski up the back side of a mogul. As you reach
the top, jump up and over the trough. Land on the back side of the
following mogul.
This is a Power Turn Drill in the mogul. When you see a good mogul
to launch off, jump up and down the fall line to initiate the turn.
Land in the power position; absorb the impact of the landing and
turn simultaneously. Let the speed of your traverse carry you over
the trough.
Practice this drill. The hardest part is timing your jump so that
you land on the back side of the next bump. As your confidence
grows, begin to shorten your traverse and ski more fall line. This
skill is used in mogul skiing when you need to jump over a trough or
bumps which otherwise would have caused disruption to your run. Most
skiers are thrown off balance by obstacles they could have jumped
over. The distance of the jump is determined more by the length of
your skis than the height achieved in the jump. Let momentum and
gravity carry you past ugly troughs and bumps. Your skis are long
enough to bridge the gap; momentum is your friend. The combination
will result in an undisrupted mogul run.
Take your time; be dynamic and loose. Review the Power Turn Drill if
you are having any problems. Mogul Ride builds the agile, mobile,
dynamic movements needed for all terrain skiing.
